1:41 Now Adonijah and all his guests heard the commotion just as they had finished eating. ¹  When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he asked, “Why is there such a noisy commotion in the city?” ²

9:8 This temple will become a heap of ruins; ³  everyone who passes by it will be shocked and will hiss out their scorn, ⁴  saying, ‘Why did the Lord do this to this land and this temple?’

12:15 The king refused to listen to the people, because the Lord was instigating this turn of events ⁵  so that he might bring to pass the prophetic announcement he had made ⁶  through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16:26 He followed in the footsteps of Jeroboam son of Nebat and encouraged Israel to sin; ⁷  they angered the Lord God of Israel with their worthless idols. ⁸ 

[1:41]  ¹ tn Heb “And Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard, now they had finished eating.”

[1:41]  ² tn Heb “Why is the city’s sound noisy?”

[9:8]  ³ tn Heb “and this house will be high [or elevated].” The statement makes little sense in this context, which predicts the desolation that judgment will bring. Some treat the clause as concessive, “Even though this temple is lofty [now].” Others, following the lead of several ancient versions, emend the text to, “this temple will become a heap of ruins.”

[9:8]  ⁴ tn Heb “hiss,” or perhaps “whistle.” This refers to a derisive sound one would make when taunting an object of ridicule.

[12:15]  ⁵ tn Heb “because this turn of events was from the Lord.”

[12:15]  ⁶ tn Heb “so that he might bring to pass his word which the Lord spoke.”

[16:26]  ⁷ tn Heb “walked in all the way of Jeroboam son of Nebat and in his sin which he made Israel sin.”

[16:26]  ⁸ tn Heb “angering the Lord God of Israel with their empty things.”
